4 Reasons You May Be Getting Migraines

Migraines can be one of the most debilitating experiences you can go through. Not only are they painful, but they can significantly impact your concentration, ability to sleep, and even your mood. When you find yourself experiencing migraines you might feel confused as if you’re hit out of left field with excruciating pain you don’t understand.

The fastest way to relief is to find out the source of your migraines so you can put an end to it once and for all. If you’re ready to put an end to laying in the darkness waiting for your throbbing headache to subside, then this article is for you. Here are five reasons you could be getting migraines, and what you can do to stop it.

Hormones

Statistics show that women are almost 20% more likely to get a migraine than a man. The reason for this has nothing to do with Adam and Eve, but more to do with hormones. Since women produce a significant amount of hormones before their periods, this can increase their chances of developing a migraine.

Not only do your hormones fluctuate during the time of your menstrual cycle, but they can also fluctuate as a result of your birth control, pregnancy, and even menopause.

Stress

Stress is more than just an uncomfortable feeling that leaves us feeling tense and pessimistic. Stress can take form physically in many cases, through the form of a  migraine. Most people who experience migraines as a result of stress are able to identify this as the trigger because they can feel the onset of symptoms coming on when a stressful experience occurs.

If you start to feel a migraine coming on, take some deep breaths, and remove yourself from the situation for at least a few minutes. If your doctor has prescribed you medication, take your medication before the migraine hits. By knowing your triggers like stress, you’ll be able to stop the migraine before it hits you, saving you hours and possibly days of pain.

Alcohol

Are you convinced that that glass or two of wine in the evenings isn’t making an impact on your overall lifestyle? Think again. The reason for your headaches may be because of an intolerance to alcohol.

Even one or two glasses of wine can dehydrate you, and lead to a next-day headache. If you’re frequently experiencing migraines, you should consider eliminating alcohol from your diet. If you do drink alcohol occasionally, always make sure that you accompany it with plenty of water.

Caffeine

People who drink a significant amount of caffeine often experience withdrawal.  Even though you may be convinced that the caffeine is helping you relieve the symptoms of your headache, the truth is that may be igniting it even more. Experts recommend drinking no more than two cups of coffee a day, and avoiding it altogether past lunchtime.
